Digital Sign Changes

The sign code’s stated purpose is:

“To preserve and promote the City as a desirable community in which to live, vacation and do business, a pleasing, visually attractive environment is of foremost importance. The regulation of signs within the City is a highly contributive means by which to achieve this desired end.”

The change described below does not align with this intent or the City’s strategic plan.

The black zones on the left map identify areas where businesses can have a digital sign that changes copy. Right now, there are a handful in the city (the Welcome to Jax Beach sign when working, the digital sign at McDonald’s on 3rd St., and Beaches Car Wash on Beach Blvd., to name a few).

Currently, they can only change once every 24 hours. The proposed LDC changes the change rate to once every 30 seconds.

The City Council meeting on Feb. 3, 2025, noted only nine digital signs are currently in Jax Beach. As the price for these signs continues to decrease, more businesses within these zones will take advantage of this change. This will impact the visual appeal of our city.

This change was never discussed during the workshops and was soundly opposed by the Planning Commission in 2014. One resident said, “We don’t want Jax Beach to look like a pinball machine.”
